Amp gauge

The PO installed an under the dash amp gauge that is causing my knee
great pain. I have an extra gauge but don't know what it's condition 
is. How does one bench check an amp gauge for proper operation? I 
want to make sure it works before I go to all the trouble of 
replacing it.
