My dad drove a Sherman in WWII. He said he liked the Ford V8 over the
Lycoming radial in his first tank, as he did not have to cold crank the gas
out of the lower cylinders to avoid blowing the bottom of the engine off
when he hit the magneto switch. Both engines he said did growl, cough, spit
and smoke enough to draw enemy mortar fire when they cranked them up in the
morning. A word to the wise if your neighborhood has a anti-weed whacker
law.
