Actually it depends on the year you have.  For
example, the triangle piece on my '66 is much tighter
and more restrictive than on my '68.  In the early
roadsters, you will have to cut, there is just no way
anything will fit thru there.  BTW I finally broke
down and cut it the SECOND time I had to replace the
starter.  On the later models, some Hudini tricks will
extract the starter without cutting.  These cars are
different in subtle, and not so subtle ways...
