The "colors" are a zinc chromate conversion designed to make the zinc
plating more durable. Datsun used several different colors but for the most
part the parts were yellow chromated that look like gold. The Americans
often used a dark olive conversion.

I used stainless on almost my entire car but had all the carbie bits and
other assorted parts plated with the yellow chromate.

Is the other plating worth the cost? Do some research on the net or library
to see.
