For about $10 you can buy a remote starter. This is a switch with
three wires - one to the + and - battery terminals and one to the
solenoid. Hook it up, press a button, and as long as the battery is
charged and the solenoid is good, it'll engage. If that's bad, or the
starter motor is bad, you'll get nothing, or a click, etc. You get the
idea.
