Pull the cam cover and check the upper timing chain guide for chain contact with
the bracket (assuming the bracket is still there).
Look at the height of the valve adjusters (okay, call them rocker pivots if you
like). If they are sunk way down low so there is very little thread showing, the
valves have probably been done a couple of times and there is minimal valve seat
left.
If you can get one of the little inspection tools that has a small light bulb on
the end of a flexible wire, shine it into the spark plug holes and look for
"eyebrows" in the tops of the pistons. This would indicate piston-to-valve
contact has occurred.
