Jeff,
An engine that is on the floor, so to speak is more difficult
to evaluate. If it could be started, you can tell if it smokes.
Smoking could mean worn rings or bad valve guides.
You could tell if there are any hammering or knocking
sounds that might mean bearing or chain problems. If
you can hook up a starter and crank the engine over then
you could do a compression test. Do it dry first, then put
some oil in the cylinders to do a wet test. Next you could
pull the valve cover off, if it is a U20 and look at the cam
lobes to see if any are scored/pitted. Pull the oil pan off
and look at the bearings by pulling a rod cap or two and
then a main cap or two to see what kind of wear. You
could then pull the head off to see cylinder wear with
micrometers. Actually might be called a bore gauge.
You take your chances with an engine on the ground.
