I think I answered my own question while thinking about it.  The ITG set up
using (in their example)14.5mm clearance is assuming that you're using an
air cleaner that breathes through the front panel.  Using an air box with an
intake only at one end, it makes sense that you'd need more clearance than
ITG suggested.
