I did wire the "lamp" light bulb as suggested by Tom Walters, as my alt has
no wires, just the post as described by Dan Neuman.  I just connected the
old white and the B/W to the post on the alt.

I still have not found the reference to this in the archives.

As I recall some alternators need a diode in line with the excitation lead
from
the ignition switch.  I don't remember what the specs need to be on it, but
the problem is that the alternator is feeding some of its output back up the
wire to the switch, which is now open.  This continues to supply power to
the
coil.  I will see if I can find any information in my records.
