List,

I have a non-Datsun metal question. I need to make a crank for an
animated prop (Okay, it's a motorized humping dog...don't ask) The
prototype was a piece of cold-rolled round steel rod. I heated and bent
the rod into the needed "Z" shape. My question is, what is the best way
to achieve a balance between hardness and toughness. To quench or not to
quench? Don't want this thing snapping or bending under stress. The
motor will be the guts of a 9.6V Makita drill making use of the gear
train and torque clutch, the rod will be 1/4" round cold rolled steel.
Thanks in advance, and bracing for comments ;-)
