More on dimmer switches,

first off, most people leave the dimmer all the way up. people also do
this on guitars they leave the volume up full all the time.

Now on a potentiometer or rheostat, you have similar metals on the
contact. over time there is a molecular transfer. molecules from part A
transfer to part B. they fuse and when you go to use it, as in turn the
knob they rip and you have a dead spot this is why when you turn the
control all the way up the lights go dim or the volume goes down.

the solution is to not let it sit in the same spot forever, and move
the knob every once in a while.

there are plenty of 30+ vintage guitars that at full volume go quiet,
and plenty of 30+ roadsters that lights go dim when the knob is turned
all the way up.
