How old is the distributor cap/rotor?

Good possibility the higher energy of the coil arced
across the distributor terminals on the inside of the
cap. Once arced, it will tend to fuse a carbon trail.

Change the cap & rotor, and give it another try. I have
also seen a rotor that "shorted" from the metal bridge
down through the plastic to the distributor shaft.
