most of the time... the price doesn't depend on who is doing the work... but
rather what you are getting... 600 for a 302 sounds like a bore and hone...
new parts (pistons, rings, gaskets, etc...)... valve job... maybe grind the
crank... resize rods... reground cam... and stick it together... no
extras... no decking the block... no align honing the mains... no balance
rotating assy... no surfacing the heads... no new seats and guides... no
'new'cam... etc...
i'm not saying that the 600 dollar rebuild is good/bad... or knocking your
machinest... it's just... most of the time... especially in the engine
buisness... the guy who is cheaper... may not be offering the same services
for his price as the higher cost guy... of course... higher cost doesn't
mean better... but neither does lower...
it's just... sometimes... you get what you pay for...
