I have driven both 1600's and 2000's. IMHO, unless you're heavily into
tweaking the engine yourself, the stock SU's will deliver the power you
need. If you're into racing and have the need for speed, make the switch to
a 2000 engine. I know some will say you can modify the 1600 into a stroker,
etc., but you did say you're purely a driver and not a mechanic.
It is not just the carbs that give you peak performance. It's all the
components working in synchronization. Concentrate on the ignition system
first. Make sure the distributor is at 100 percent peak performance. New
spark plugs and high efficiency cables. New coil and voltage regulator. Get
the timing right. These things are easily done by a novice. Only then
should you tweak the carbs (a bit more difficult). Then there are other
things like valves, etc. to adjust.
My 1970 1600 Blondie can keep up with most 2000's up to 100mph. In a race
it'll always lose to the 2000's. My '70 1600 engine is 100 percent stock
and serves me well. For my '66 1600 I wanted a performance boost and made
the switch to a 2000 engine. If you want a boost, that's one of the best
ways to go. Naturally, the '66 2000 is much quicker than the '70 1600.
However, I did make some mods to the 2000, because it made more sense than
doing it on the 1600.
