Gary,
First you have to take the locking nut off the bolt and then unscrew the bolt
at the steering shaft / u-joint junction. It should come apart easily then,
unless corroded. It may need a little persuasion with a slide hammer on the
steering wheel end. Just a few taps with the slide hammer and it should come
off.
I don't think it will come apart without the bolt out of the u-joint.
