I've been using a gear reduction starter (intended for a '92 Nissan
forklift) for about 5 or 6 years now with no problems whatsoever. It's about
half the size and weight of a standard U20 starter. Easy to r&r, lots of
torque even with my lawn tractor battery. Yes, that's right, I use a lawn
tractor battery in my 2000. Cheap and LIGHT, and it hasn't failed me since
installation 5 or 6 years ago, even in single-digit temperatures.

Subject: tiny gear reduction starters??
Hello All,
Is anybody on the list using a gear reduction starter?? Some posted
that they are 'tiny'. Are they in fact much smaller than the stock (U-20)
starter?? Think that I am going to need a new starter soon and I am
looking at alternatives.
