Dan,
        Is this a 3-piece oil ring, with a thin top and bottom scraper, and a
thick middle section?  If so, you're fine.  The middle bit is just a
spacer, and actually should sit close to the piston, away from the
cylinder wall.  I haven't used a 3-piece Deves, but other 3-piecers work
like this, and are just fine.
