The 5th gear in the 5 speed transmission was pressed onto the smooth shaft..
I do not know if at the time they had some way to fix it other than
disassembly of the transmission, and replacing the 5th unsplined gear and
shaft. I stated at the time it cost me $300.00 for just the shaft and gear
from (datsun) in 1978. I can't imagine what it would cost today, plus the
labor to have someone do it. Good Luck.
