69 srl fifth gear

hello all,
i have a rather involved story as to why i even need to ask this
question,but that is just a waste of energy. to the question: i can get
into fifth gear,howevew it does not engage,,just revs. is that the timing
chain? any other possibilities? this is my friends car...he does not posses
the technology.
