The main purpose of the windshield support rod is to sit there and look
stupid, and to obstruct your vision ! I took mine off 16 years ago, I've
never had any problems due to it not being there. I've done about half a
million miles in that time, the windscreen still seals (every other part
of the car leaks though) , I've never broken a windshield and the
soft-top still seals onto the top of the frame.
