Upper Chain Guide Bracket:
This is a topic that always raises lots of discussion. Some feel that the
cam gear support (lovingly referred to as the "evil L-bracket") is a design
flaw, a potential engine-killer, and should always be cut off when
installing a new upper chain guide. Others (including myself) feel it is a
handy feature and not a danger if an engine is properly assembled and
maintained. Suit yourself. Just keep in mind that these early timing chanis
were not expected to last longer than about 60,000 miles.
Overheating:
The most important thing is to make sure the temp gauge works correctly
before assuming anything else about engine temperatures. On the 2000 the
temp sending unit ground rarely works correctly. I think there is a
tipsheet somewhere about this.
