Ewwwww,
First thing to check are the detent springs. THey hold the forks in
position, and if they're weak or put together wrong, sometimes you'll
pop outa gear. If it's really easy to slide the shifter into neutral,
that might be it. There's supposed to be a ball bearing that fits into
the notch on the shifting rods- I bought a 'rebuilt' trans that didn't
have any! Bummer is, I don't think that you can get at them with a
4-speed in the car. It's been a LONG time since I worked on mine.
It also might be a really sloppy shift linkage (missing bushings?) that
isn't pushing the shift selector far enough into the trans, and thereby
not locking it into gear. That would explain 2&4 popping out. It could
also be a bent shift selector, which would do the same thing, but be a
heck of a lot harder to fix...
See if the shifter feels 'symmetrical'- is the distance from N to 3 the
same as N to 4? (I seem to remember that 1st was way up there,
different than 2,3 & 4) Does neutral seem to be about centered in the
shift pattern?
Good luck,
Toby
