Both Rhoade Gear and Yakima (sp?) make a wide range of adjustable racks. 
The models I'm thinking about are basically a couple of hoops ("U" 
shaped) that can can be adjusted to rest on the car and you hold them 
with four tension straps. There are two arms that stick out to the rear 
and/or upward to which you secure the bike(s). This may be more weight 
than you'd want to put (even partially) on a deck lid.

How about a receiver type trailer hitch? Frame mounted, of course. You'd 
probably have to have one custom made. Probably $100/150. There are a 
number of bike racks designed to go into a hitch in place of the ball 
carrier, $80/100.
