Subject: toyota gearbox

On the gearbox: First some background; the gearbox was in the car when I
bought the car. The 2nd prev. owner said he thought it was out of a
Celica. He had done the conversion. But it was a long time ago. Iam
driving the car in hot lap events at Sebring, Moroso, And Homestead,
some autocrosses. I thought I had a gear box problem last time out. Long
story, it turned out to be T/O bearing related. So out come the eng
&box. Find real problem. But figure I should Check inside anyway. 3rd
gear and syncro a little worn. So might as well replace. Went to local
Toyota dealer, long story, but he was no help refused to help without
VIN# of org. car. Went to local junk yard, bought what I thought was the
same trans for $100.
My trans. is 28"overal the org ford is 31 1/2. The shift is 4"
rearward of ford. No problem. This is only mod to chassis(for shifter)
The trans from junk yard was marked in chalk 5sp 84 4AC Corolla SR5. The
overall length was same but when I got it home the shifter was back
another 4-6". However the gear box section was the same. We changed the
gears and it is back together. The case of the trans is split down the
center from front to back. Iam told T-50 style. Not yet in car.
Later conversation with junk yard <"said it would be no problem finding
the absolute same trans. that I have. Same shifter post.
To do install you need: adapater plate for lotus bell housing, correct
length drive shaft, different pilot bearing (have #), new T/O bearing
nose carrier so you can use the org ford T/O and T/O fork, rear mount.
My eng bottom end is built 12.5/1 CR, stock head, (thats next) out put
at rear wheels is 110hp SAE. Est 130 at flywheel. (I have a dynojet
chassis dyno.) In the 3 years I have owned the car I have not exp. any
problems(knock on wood). As I know youall are interested, so am I to
find out exactly what I have. They make close ratio and Euro gear sets.
I am told Euro is best combo.
Let me know if I can Help
