Hi Peter,

I guess it's an example of where do you stop once you start. If the cam is
replaced I've understood that replacing the valve springs as well is also a
good idea. They're all part of the same sub-set of the engine so it's
possible that the full benefits of a cam swap won't be realised unless the
springs are new as well. Then if you do that why not re-con the heads to
make sure the valves are sealing, and then maybe the short block could do
with a freshen up as well....you can see where I'm going.

I'm going to do a compression test on the engine this weekend, and double
check to see if all the pushrods are spinning (a good sign that the original
cam profile still exists). If it all looks OK I'll replace the timing chain,
as that seems to be pretty worn, and leave it at that for now.

My plan is to do 'external' things to the engine, such as inlet manifold
(single plane already on), CDI multi-spark ignition, and I'll attempt to get
those SD1 exhaust manifolds on as well. That way when I do get another
engine all the good bits will already be on the car to be used.

Do you still have your P5B? If so have you done any more work on it?

Simon

Dear Simon,
I follow your logic, but not as to why you would want to replace the
valve springs. Replacing the valve springs with the heads still on is not
a straight-forward task. There are techniques but there is always the
potential for a mis-hap and the necessity of having to remove a head to
retrieve a valve.

The '66 Daimler project is progressing at the glacial pace that can be
typical of some of these projects. Brakes & steering completed. Engine &
gearbox running on test-bed, and will start fitting them next week. Sure
to be finished by Christmas (but I'm not sure which one!)

Cheers
Peter
