I usually knock together some scrap wood to support all around the oil pan
flange (so the bolt heads rest on the wood).  Leave the front and rear cross
pieces long, so it doesn't tip sideways as easily.

My 4x8 trailer has eyes near the corners for tie-downs, and I use 4 of those
ratchet strap things from HF/K-mart to secure the engine all 4 ways.  Works
for me.
