 As a rough general guide for Lucas and "universal" coils, the two
most common units encountered, measure the primary winding 
resistance. Around 1.5 ohms is an external ballast type, 3 or 4
ohms is internal (no ballast).

 Lucas coils as fitted to points type ignitions do not take a ballast.
The electronic ignition cars used a ballast resistor in the form of
resistance wire in the primary feed. This is pretty much 75-on cars
here in the US market.

 early 70's SPits and GT6s use Delco ignitions, so the above does not
apply.
