As the TR 2,3,4 are all wet sleeve engines they *require* head gasket compound.
I've seen green coolant shoot out the exaust and exaust shoot out the
radiator of a TR3 when the head wasn't sealed. Kinda exciting... ( perhaps
this is part of Will Zehring's dream.. He subconsiously wants a TR4 but is
afraid of the awesome power...) :-)
I've used the copper permatex and some red permatex stuff (the non drying
type) at different times with success and silicone on all the other gaskets
especially the front mounting plate, timing cover and oil pan on my son's
TR4A and it doesn't leak.
Good luck and
ignore your nightmares.
