As the TR 2,3,4 are all wet sleeve engines they *require* head gasket compound.
I've seen green coolant shoot out the exaust and exaust shoot out the 
radiator of a TR3 when the head wasn't sealed.  Kinda exciting... ( perhaps 
this is part of Will Zehring's dream.. He subconsiously wants a TR4  but is 
afraid of the awesome power...) :-)

I've used the copper permatex and some red permatex stuff (the non drying 
type) at different times with success and silicone on all the other gaskets 
especially the front mounting plate, timing cover and oil pan on my son's 
TR4A and it doesn't leak.
