Reply to Doug the Herald, Re: rubber tube placement: Oft times I have
found that the hissing of air due to a vacuum leak can be found by
putting a rubber tube in the ear and probing around for the leak with the
other end. Tuning SU carbs is done in a similar way, you balance the
idle on each one by the pitch of the sound of the air at the inlet, no
need for that expensive SU balance thingy. A screwdriver, handle end
first works as well for mechanical sounds- to locate an alternator
bushing, water pump bearing, rod knock, loose rocker etc, stick the long
screwdriver onto the suspect area and the handle in your ear and listen
for where the sound is the loudest- cheaper than the NAPA stethescope
with a metal probe on the end for doing the same thing---
