I've brought a lot of body work into Canada for a Healey and a TR3 and
used the exemptions your customer is referring to. The system runs on
what are called ANNEX CODES, which you get, item per item, from Canada
customs. You, in this case, is the customer though.
The items are spared a great deal of import taxation and this makes a big
difference on a large order. However, if the part fits ALSO fits a newer
than 25 yr. old car as well as your chosen vehicle then it's no dice.
Don't do the annex code work for your TR6 customer or you stand to be in
court for ading customs tax evasion! Let this fellow do his/her own dirty
work. And they can! Here's how:
You figure out what you're going to buy and from whom. You then phone
Canada Customs and tell them what the stuff is for. They then look it all
up and give you the codes for the shipment. I did this with Healey floor
and the parts came through with a form that I then mailed off to Can.
Customs with a copy of my invoice to show that I was exempt these taxes.
Later I ordred more floor and body bits, used the same annex codes and
had no problem.
Bushings for my TR3 were another story. They would fit too many other
modern cars and so did not qualify as exempt. Don't ask me how they knew
that ! (and they would no sell me a list of annex codes)
Neither can you have a mixed shipment. This is why, if you go to the
trouble, it is cheaper to buy from the states and than from a Canadian
supplier you has had a mixed shipment in, if you're buying old car aprts.
The Canadian supplier has paid duty on everything and passes the costs on.
As a final note your customer with the TR6 can get the stuff in from you,
pay all the duty, and then apply for a rebate, but it's much tougher to
do. He knws he doesn't qualify, I'd guess, and so hopes you'll code the
stuff for him and that customs won't open it to check. Eve nif you coded
it as for an older car the customs gnomes will know that it also fits the
newwer TRs and he will be out of luck.
Hope this helps Dana.
