Larry,
Appropriate tire size for your MGB depends on what wheels you're using.
Stock wire wheels are only 4.5" wide and won't carry much larger than the
165-14 tire. Rostyle steel wheels are 5.0" wide and barely accommodate a
185/70-14. Tires any wider than these on stock wheels will be pinched at
the bead and will not lay flat on the road, eventually wearing out in the
center.

Here are how some wheel/tire sizes compare to the stock ones:

tire size wheel width range tire diameter
165R14 4.0-5.5" 24.49"
175R14 4.5-6.0" 24.96"
185/70R14 5.0-6.5" 24.57"
195/60R14 5.5-7.0" 23.23"
205/60R14 5.5-7.5" 23.70"
205/55R14 5.5-7.5" 22.91"
195/60R15 5.5-7.0" 24.21"

You pays yer money and takes yer choice, but you're gonna need wider
wheels if you're gonna run wider tires. Then there's the fender clearance
consideration....
