Hi everyone,
This is my first posting to this group. I just have a couple questions.
I have a 1974 MG Migdet with 80,000 miles on the odometer. I have no idea if
this is the accurate mileage at all. Anyway, I bought this car about a year
and a half ago. When I got it, the transmission was half-gone, the engine was
running badly, and the body, though sound, had a zillion little dents.
Well, 18 months, two transmissions, a head rebuild, and 3,000 really fun miles
later, I have a Midget that runs quite well, shifts beautifully, and is still
dented. The engine has never (knock knock) overheated, and the oil pressure
(knock knock) is about 80 psi cold, 50-70 psi running, 25-35 psi at idle. The
3000 miles I have driven have been exclusively around town. Anyway, on to my
questions:
First, how fast is it safe to run constantly on the highway in this car?
(Keep in mind that it's a 3-main engine and the final drive translates
to about 3700-4000 RPM at 65 MPH. I'm just wondering if anyone has
any suggestion on the upper limit to engine speed for long drives.)
Second, are there any reasonably affordable (<$400) products or techniques to
improve performance? I was thinking something along the lines of a
carb or cam, but any ideas would help.
Third, I have a 1972 Midget parts car I'm trying to ditch. If there are any
parts you need for a Midget, let me know. I have a solid 1275 engine,
some interior parts, one good front fender, a lot of miscellaneous
crap, and a good rear diff (steel wheels) that I'd be willing to sell
for a reasonable price. Just email me if you're interested.
