This would be Frank Costin, surely, and not Mike (who is the 'Cos' in
Cosworth)?
Ob Britcars (if the above doesn't qualify): The Minis
Well, the Clubman GT is back from the bodyshop - not a bad job on the
whole, but small areas weren't done to the standard I'd like. Nevermind
for what it cost I got a reasonable job.
The subframes came out that day, I stripped the motor down, and
(given it had compression tests of 195 80 170 155 psi) every single
piston had at least one broken ring! Piston 4 had an area of the
top ring land which was about 1/4" wide - it seems two bits of ring
got to fighting and cleared a space in the crowd. Interestingly,
piston 2 seemed in pretty good nick.
The bores were, not unnaturally worn - with an interesting 2-part
ridge - the tope leven was where the first ring was, but once that
broke, the second ring wore its own ridge. So all the heavy metal
is off at the engineering shop, getting trued, rebored, cleaned out
and replugged. I should have it back by Friday (tomorrow) and will
then reassemble it!! Unfortunately I had to use my forged +0.040"
Mahle pistons (worth ~$A500) and I'm only going to sell the car -
still, should add some value. Oh yes, the rods were also 2 thou
out of round, so after about $400 worth of machining, it'll all be
tickety-boo.
Painted the engine bay last night - howling gale outside the relative
quiet of the garage, then the little compressor started up. Well,
the neighbours didn't complain, so it couldn't have been too loud.
Now all I have to do is paint the footwells and other stuff inside.
Does anyone have an opinion on getting a new roof lining? It'll
obviously add enormously to the impression when looking inside the
car, would I be likely to recoup the cost at sale time (maybe $150)?
regards,
