I've done this pretty much by feel several times. Turned out fine in each
case, but your milage may differ.
>Q. What is it when was it used???
I've never seen or heard of a vacuum switch on a (4 cyl) MGB. Big Healeys
and such had them, though. The idea behind it is a bit obscure. What it does
is not let the overdrive release while vacuum is high, ie throttle closed.
The shear inertia of the engine could break the rear tires free. Not a healthy
situation if you're coming into a corner too hot, lift, and kick out the OD all
at the same time.

Nothing to it, other than pulling the flywheel. If you're going to replace
the locktabs, just as well get the seal retainer plate, too. It's got folding
tabs.

I have two "L" brackets with 1/2" (?) holes in them. Remove the valve cover,
put the retaining cap nuts through the brackets, them wind them back down
tight against the rocker pedistal nuts. Works on everything BMC except Mini's.
BTW, engines with prementent lift tabs gives some insight into the reliablity
the designer expected. :>
>Q. Any ideas where the inside "rain" might be coming from? How to stop it?
Check the rubber around the wiper spindles and washer jets. Also check the
fit, and presence of, the big rubber bung behind the master cylinders.

As far as I've been able to tell, the plastic fan is just quieter. The two
fans used a different bolt circle, but I believe your water pump and pulley
should have both. If so, it'll fit.

Hmmm, got me. There are different styles, but I don't know the exact year
breaks.
>Bonus question (requires knowledge of late TRs & Spits)
Good, I need to make up for the last one. :>

TR6's had them, but I don't think that bracket would be readily adaptable.
Might I suggest one of those universal ones (hung by a single bolt) mounted
on the left front to the radiator support?
