Putting a DCOE or SK carb on the Spitfire may also necessitate getting a
exhaust manifold, as there might not be a good way to make the new intake
manifold fit with the stock exhaust. A nice header would help. The
side draft might offer a bit more power, once tuned, over the downdraft.
Adding the downdraft DGxV series would require putting a "sink trap" pipe
on the intake, which increases the ram length of the intake, but adds quite
a few bends to the passage. Personally, I'd recommend the sidedraft, assuming
you can live with 20 or so mpg. It is possible to get better mileage if
you work at it.

The side draft setup would be roughly $200 for manifold and linkage, and
$200 for a carb, probably a 40DCOE for your case, and another $30 to $50 for
air filters, hardware bits and such. With no internal mods, a 45 Weber would
be too big. And while you may be good at following the instructions, it is
quite possible that a conversion kit would not have any, assuming you already
know what to do. There are some others on this list who have put Weber(s)
on a 1500 motor, they can offer more specific help when needed.
