Check for air leaks on the carb that can't be made to run rich. It's
possible that you have a leak somewhere downstream of the carb, or in a
vacuum connection.

Also, the problem with the wire extender is easily solved by taking the
screw-on tip from a discarded spark plug and putting it on there!
