Shel,
Regarding your query about the excessive fuel tank pressure and odor in the
boots of the XJS and the S3. There is a factory recall out for almost all
of the XJS vehicles. The cannister purge system is modified to purge
quicker and the 2 psi check valve that you referred to is deleted from the
rear section of the car. Dual check valves, parallel in the circuit are
installed in the left front wheelwell near the charcoal cannister. These
valves hold the system to 1 psi therefore limiting pressure on the fuel
tank. Considering the number of fuel tanks I have changed, in my opinion
they are constructed to the high quality that the British demand (i.e.
Lucas). Please note that these recalls do not cost the owner a penny. If
they smell fuel in the boot area after repairs, and the smell persists for a
while, then check to see if the tank was replaced. In most instances the
fuel tank is not replaced. Put the pressure on the dealer to replace it if
you feel you still have a problem.
Series 3 XJ6s have a similar quality problem and have a nasty habit of
developing leaks at the seams, pressure or not.
In the case of both vehicles the check valve must be in the system, don't
remove it! This valve prevents the gas from evaporating into the
atmosphere. Its removal also may overload the charcoal cannister which may
cause running problems for the petrol injection system (EFI).
