OK, lets fix this up a bit:

75-80 MGB Miata
Gas Mileage 18 30
HP ~65 116
Weight ~2300 2200
Liters 1.8 1.6
Rear End 3.9 3.7?
This yeilds:
lbs/HP 35.4 (UGH!) 19
Now, that is a bit sad. You don't have a chance. But:
63-74 MGB (stock) Miata
Gas Mileage 25-30 30
HP (89 to) 98 116
Weight ~2100 2200
Liters 1.8 1.6
Rear End 3.9 3.7?
lbs/HP (98) 21.1 19
Now we're getting closer, but not quite. The MGB engine can put out
110 HP without getting too radical, which is what an older car would
need to match the Maita. But the 121 HP needed for the heavier car
is gets a bit rich. (better to chop out some weight) Then, if
you're going to drag, there's still the matter of the rear end ratio,
which will put you in front, up to a point. (lower top speed)
There is hope, and it costs a lot less than a Miata. And, that's with
a pretty reliable state of tune. Oh, yea- the MGC and MGB V8 were in
the 125-140 HP range, stock.
