Gerry writes about his final act of fitting cooler plugs to remove
'pinging' or 'pinking' as us Brits say. I totally agree with him, in fact I
believe that this is the first thing to do when building a high compression
engine.
A brief story regarding cooler plugs:
My brother has a Triumph Dolomite Sprint (the Sprint engine is basically a
TR7 engine but with a 16 valve head, I have one in my TR7 ~ 150bhp) which
has an old and highly skimmed head. I like to think that I can tune
engines, but this one wouldn't stop 'pinking' even with the timing at 0
degrees before top dead centre (BTDC) (it should be 10 degrees). I took it
to my local rolling road (now defunct - the UK recession) he slapped in new
cooler plugs (2 stages cooler) and the 'pinking' was gone at 8 degrees
BTDC. Not bad!
