My 79 Midget has recently developed the anoying habit of backfiring on
upshifts. This is paticularly bad when cold (as might be expected) and
subsides somewhat as the engine warms up - however the problem never goes
away and hard acceleration always produces one or two good pops.
This problem surfaced after the air injection system was reinstalled (smog
check time!) so that seems to be the main culprit. Thinking the gulp valve
wasn't working I replaced that - no luck. Any other ideas? Am I in danger
of blowing my exhaust system to bits? (they aren't gunshot-like backfires,
just loud pops). I think the mixture is pretty close to correct (at least
that's what colortune says). help! anyone got any ideas?
