The reason why it snapped with the door shut is because that is when the
Torsion bar is fully under Torsion.
Also the Torsion bar on the Delorean DOES NOT hold the door open..it is there
only as a "Torsion spring" to pop the door open enough so that the actual
Strut can hold the door in the open position,in other words the full force of
the energy is released from the Torsion bar when you open a Delorean door,it
releases the energy needed to swing the door open, then it basically has LOST
about 80% of it's stored energy in the open position, hence the need for a door
strut to actually hold the door open,so when you close a Delorean door you are
putting the Delorean Torsion bar under a full load to again release that
energy to swing the door open, that is why they will ONLY snap with a closed
door.

I think they use adjustable torsion bars in those. I read a story about a guy
that was in his garage when one of them snapped with the door down. He said it
sounded like a gun shot.
