This (no need of latches) may be true on cars with Hydraulic doors, but not
true on air door cars the doors can swing open if you push on them, The
weight of the door is the only thing that closes them and holds them down
unlike hydraulics that actually "power" the doors down. since probably 90%
of the cars have been changed (for better or worse) to air these latches
become important. They are also important in the case of side impact. they
will help hold the door from entering the passenger compartment, that is
unless the mounting point in the bird cage is rotten.
