  Actually, it was for a striker. The original design was a striker in the
"A" pillar and one in the "B" pillar. After crash tests they found the door
stayed shut without the strikers, so they eliminated them. That's why the
'74 cars have openings in the doors  for the latch mechanism. They were
eliminated in the '75s.
