I had the same thing happen on my 84 Chevy van. If
you do not line up the slots on the end of the torque
converter with the tangs on the transmission gear you
can shear the tangs off when you bolt up the trannie.
This means the torque converter spins but the pump,
which is attached to the gear does not. You will have
to replace that gear with a new one to make the pump
work. My trannie guy says that by the time you do
that it may be better to get another trannie. That's
what I ended up doing.
