Serge: The easiest (not necessarily the cheapest) way to add displacement
is to bore and stroke the 351. You can easily stroke it to 408 cubic inches
with 450-500 horse power and over 500 foot-pounds of torque. The stoker
combination puts tons of torque down low making the engine very driveable.
In kit form with new steel crank, H beam rods, forged pistons, good aluminum
heads and intake it will cost about $4500 - $5000 (US). You can go even
bigger but that cost even more! This combo weighs about 50 lbs less than
stock and bolts to the stock mounts with no modification, a direct bolt in.
You may want to (and should ) upgrade the transmission while you are there
so you can take advantage of the extra tire smokin power. I am presently
looking for a trans for mine and may end up with a ZF or Richmond 6 speed
most automatics wont take the extra torque). I already changed the rear end
to a 9" ford. The stock AMC won't handle much power if you put a decent size
tire on it.
If you have a 74 the AMC 401 bolts right in and wit ha little massage it'll
make close to 500 ponies but AMC speed parts are expensive and hard to get
your hand on. The 727 trans will handle just about anything you can bolt it
to ( with a little massaging)
