I have done this swap many times in my AMXs, and it is bolt-in. The spring
perches are the same, the pinion angle is the same, and the width is 1"
more for the Ford, or 1/2" more on either side. (From the spring perch to
the drum). However, the 9" I used is from a Mustang, Cougar, or with disc
brakes, from a Lincoln Versailles. You will find it is wider than the
Bricklin/Gremlin/Hornet 8 cyl rearend by a few inches, and you may have to
use different offset wheel to make up for it. An easier solution is to
order one of the 4 wheel disc setups from one of the AMC vendors. All the
parts are bolt-on, and available. Plus, you can use a variety of rearend
gears, which are limited with the Versaille rear. And no, you are not
crazy-this does have a flange on the end of the driveshaft for the rearend.
You can have driveshafts made and balanced relatively cheaply-look for a
wheel and bearing place, or one that modifies large trucks. Bring f the
AMC driveshaft-yoke and all-and the Ford driveshaft and they can make them
for you.
