I like the idea. It's just getting folks to plan ahead that's the hard
part. Many autocrossers don't decide to go until the morning of the event.
Hangovers, weather, can change anyone's plans.
So far, the money part of the idea is checks mailed in. So you mail your
check Saturday, the day before? Too late for that event, and would have to
be applied to the next event if the check doesn't arrive in time.
If it went to a Paypal system, with credit cards, the SFR Solo
contingent would have to go through the process of setting up a credit card
acceptance system, to be watched over by a highly motivated and committed
chief registrar.
And there's the rub. Don Lew is an awesome guy, but the work load of
this system may require more time over a long term period than he may be
willing to do. A year? Plus the responsibility of the money handlng and
transfer--unless the PayPal was directly connected to the SFR Solo 2
account.
Keeping track of those who register and don't show requires some
consistent bookkeeping.
Atlanta Region does a similar thing, but you pay at the event...with
cash or a check. But at least the event organizers know approximately how
many are planning on coming. So there is still a line, but the hard-working
registrar saves you some time at the event.
No one likes standing in line, but you need to, just to sign the release
and get your wrist band. :)
