All 5-speed Miatas have the same transmission gear ratio's.

shorter = higher number
longer = taller = smaller number

there is usually a differential ratio AND the individual gear ratios.

Am I the only person who finds this shorter vs. taller terminology
confusing?

Does shorter mean a larger numeric ratio (lower gear), or a smaller
numeric
ratio (higher gear)?

Over the years I think I've heard people use these terms both ways,
which is
why it's confusing.

Try Shorter. the 90-93 Miatas have 4.303:1 gears The 94-97 cars have
4.1:1
gears, and the 99-2001 5-speeds have 4.303:1 gears again. The 6-speeds
have
3.909:1 gears, but a must charter 1-st and all the gears are closer
together.

Um, Scot, I don't want to get into a "yes you are/no I'm not" debate
here, but the '99+ 5-speed cars have a longer gearing than the '94-97
cars. 5th in the '99+ 6-speed cars is about the same as 5th in the
94-97 cars. 5th in the 5-speed cars is slightly higher.

Maybe the 90-93 cars used a longer gearing the 94-97 cars, but it
seems like you'd really be hurting in the acceleration department if
that were the case.
