I can't believe that I am perpetuating such a ridiculous topic.
Has nobody considering these rules even been in a car where the bags
deployed...or seen footage? They do come out fast, so you don't want
your arms in front of your face when they deploy. But, that means that
they are fully deployed and stop moving well before your body (or
helmeted melon) has a chance to get to the bag. If you are close enough
that the chin guard makes a difference in whether or not the airbag
injures you, you are too close to begin with.
In my older cars that had 1st generation systems, I always disabled them
since I thought they were too big and didn't offer any more protection
than I need with my restraint. In my newer cars that have more
reasonably sized bags, I have left them enabled. Never actually
deployed a current generation system, but I know they are far less
powerful than what was installed 10 years ago.
It seems like an unnecessary waste of time and energy for them to go
through this.
