I had considered this approach as well.  Unfortunately, roll bars are 
only allowed under Apendix C which is somewhat dated in it's 
construction requirements.  The GCR does a good job of requiring minimum 
tube diameter and wall thickness based on the actual properties of the 
material.  Appendix C just requires THICK wall tubes.

If all I had to do to meet Appendix C is to use a thick wall main hoop 
and rear supports I suppose it wouldn't be too bad.  However, it's not 
clear if I can hang a bunch of 'stuff' off it in the form of side hoops 
and not be subjected to the contruction requirements of Appendix C.

BTW, one of the reasons I wish to not build a full GCR cage is my desire 
to use somewhat unconventional door bars much like seen here.
